When I was an athlete, my idea of “health” was simple: perform on the pitch. It was about macros, muscle soreness, and mile times. It was a numbers game, and my body was a machine to be tuned for a single purpose.
But when that machine broke down—when my injury took me out of the game—I was forced to look deeper. The doctors initially couldn’t find the “number” or the “data point” that explained my pain. It was a frustrating lesson: health is not just a set of metrics you can easily track on an app.
Through my engineering studies, I began to see the human body not just as a machine, but as the most complex, interconnected system you could ever analyze. True health isn’t just about the absence of disease; it’s about the presence of vitality, resilience, and energy that emanates from within. It’s the foundation upon which everything else—fitness, mindset, and purpose—is built.
The Three Systems of True Health
To engineer optimal health, we need to look at three core systems that work in harmony:
1. Fuel: It’s More Than Just Calories
You wouldn’t put low-grade fuel into a high-performance engine. Your body is no different. Nutrition is the information your body uses to repair, energize, and thrive.
-
Actionable Tip: Shift your focus from restriction to addition. Instead of thinking “I can’t eat that,” ask, “What can I add to my plate that will nourish me?” Prioritize whole foods—colorful vegetables, quality proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates—that reduce inflammation and provide sustained energy, not just a quick sugar rush.
2. Recovery: Where the Magic Happens
As an athlete, I knew training broke me down, but sleep built me back stronger. This is true for everyone. Sleep is non-negotiable. It’s when your body repairs tissue, consolidates memory, regulates hormones (like cortisol and hunger hormones), and detoxifies.
-
Actionable Tip: Protect your sleep like your career depends on it—because it does. Create a nightly wind-down ritual: power down screens an hour before bed, make your room cool and dark, and try reading a book or practicing light meditation. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep.
3. Internal Environment: Managing Your Stress Ecosystem
During my injury, my stress levels were through the roof. I learned that chronic stress floods your system with cortisol, which can impair digestion, weaken the immune system, and hinder recovery. Your mental state is directly wired to your physical health.
-
Actionable Tip: You can’t always control external events, but you can control your response. Incorporate small, daily practices to manage your internal environment. This could be 5 minutes of deep breathing, a walk in nature, journaling to dump anxious thoughts, or even just pausing for a moment of gratitude. This isn’t “soft” work; it’s essential system maintenance.

Engineering Your Health Blueprint
Your health is your greatest project. It requires a blueprint. You don’t need a massive overhaul overnight. Start by auditing one of these three systems:
-
Fuel: Could you add one more serving of vegetables to your day?
-
Recovery: Could you go to bed 30 minutes earlier tonight?
-
Internal Environment: Could you take 5 deep breaths when you feel stressed?
Small, consistent engineering adjustments create a compound effect, leading to incredible long-term results. You’ll build more energy, think more clearly, and build the resilient foundation needed to pursue your biggest goals.
Your Health is the Foundation of Your Purpose
My injury forced me to build a new life from the ground up. I learned that without a foundation of genuine health, it’s impossible to sustain the energy required for a powerful mindset and a fulfilling purpose.
